The Style Imitating Art outfit inspiration this week is Nick Cave’s Soundsuit. Style Imitating Art is hosted by Salazar (14 Shades of Grey), Terri (Meadow Tree Style), and Daenel (Living Outside the Stacks). Style Imitating Art challenges us to draw style inspiration from pieces of art. Every other Monday one of the hosts selects an inspiration image and they each post the image on their blogs. The following Monday they share their art inspired outfits. Participants submit their art inspired outfits with the curator by 10 PM Tuesday and, that Wednesday, the curator shares all of the submissions on her blog.
This week’s work of art was chosen by Terri because “…I have always been in awe of these works. They can stand on their own as sculptures but make an incredible present when worn and combined with dance movement. Their meaning and reason of origin are also impactful. Creatively, I feel, they offer quite a variety of colors, materials, and styles to work with.” For copyright reasons, we can’t share actual images of Nick Cave’s Soundsuit, but you can find examples here.
Although this quirky artwork is full of many different elements, it was the crochet, floral designs and bright colours that stood out to me. So I dived into my wardrobe to see what would work. There was one thing I knew I wanted to wear and that was my black crochet cardigan which has a large floral (ish) design on the back. Scrutinising the artwork again, it was brown that seemed to speak to me so I tried my wide-legged chocolate brown cords and was quite taken with how the two seemed to work together.
Colour was my next priority and this is when I remembered a top I’ve had for a while (but never worn!). The colour and the design fit perfectly with the kind of look I was going for. Once I started putting everything on, I realised I needed another colour element to really make it look like it was inspired by Nick Cave’s Soundsuit. Out came this fabulous scarf (a gift from a dear friend several years ago).
As for shoes, I went with my gorgeous Ruby Shoos, purely for the colour. Style-wise, they’re not the best option, but they don’t look too bad. Because Nick Cave’s Soundsuit art features lots of different textures, colours and prints, I decided to add a hint of animal print in my necklace (yes, you’ve guessed it, my mother-in-law gave it to me lol), and one of my Desigual bags. As for the outfit as a whole, I actually really like it. It’s mixing things I wouldn’t ordinarily mix and that’s one of the main reasons I love taking part in the Style Imitating Art challenge. What do you think? How would you have interpreted this wacky theme? Why not join us next time? Just keep an eye on Daenel’s blog, to find out what the next piece of artwork will be. I’m excited! I hope you are too!

Suzy, I love your interpretation of the soundsuit! Your gorgeous crocheted sweater and scarf are so brilliant! And I love the combination of textures with the crochet, corduroy trousers, and tweed shoes. You look fabulous!

Thank you so much, Shelbee! It was such a fun theme to do. But you’re the one that seriously rocked this one!

This post was a real eye opener Suzy - I’d never heard of Nick Cave’s soundsuit sculptures! And you look amazing in those rich saturated colours particularly with that vibrant lippy. You must be an autumn! I love the outfit but those colours wouldn’t work for me.
I hadn’t either, Gail! The Soundsuit is so unusual but incredibly eye catching! Have you see Shelbee’s interpretation? It’s very impressive!
I think I probably am an Autumn, although I am pretty lucky with colours. The only colour that is really bad (like horrendous lol) is beige!!

You did such a great job….
Waaait let me back up, your accent slays me. OK, last time commenting on it. Promise! ❤️
I love your outfit. Even with all of the colors and textures, I’d wear it to work. It all just goes. Now I wish I’d thought to wear my tweed shoes. I own a pair that have never been worn. And yours caught my eye.
Also you pronounced my name correctly. So many people call me “Darlene.” I don’t know why. Weirdos. LOL
OMG Darlene, really??! It doesn’t look anything like Darlene. And you certainly don’t LOL!! I’m so glad I said your name right! I’m excited to see what the next piece of art will be!!
Thank you so much, lovely!
